Ebooks/Digital Storytelling
Wow! It's exciting to see all that is available to us. I'm not sure that this would be considered an "e-books," but at the school where I am employed we have a subscription to "Tumblebooks." This site has bookbooks that are read to students, or students may read it themselves. It also has quizzes with many of hte stories. We also have a subscription to "Sylvan- Dell Books" which works much the same way. All of the classrooms have access to this. E-books are not used in the media center. At this point, no one at our school is using digital storytelling, though it sounds great. It seems to be a innovative way for students to do book reports and such, but Time constraints and the responsibilty of covering the curriculum oten takes precedence over learning new technologies. It is something I would like to dive into a little deeper and see how it could be used in the media center

Yes. I think that Tumblebooks would be considered either an eBook or a form of digital storytelling. It is a neat sight and I plan to try to find a use for it with my high school students, especially this school year. Each students is being encouraged to read at least 25 books. Perhaps reading one online or via their cell phone might be more appealing to this age group.
I have not ever heard of those websites, but they sound like they are worth checking out. No one in my school is using eBooks or digital storytelling either. I think that new technology is sometimes hard to promote. Like I said in my original post, teachers are sometimes reluctant to use something new for the same reasons that you stated.Great job.
I will take note of the two web sites you mentioned in your blog and add them to my resource page. I think e-books would be great to use in the media center. There are a variety of web sites that offer e-books for students and the more exposure they have to books the better, regardless of which media is used to present the material. Digital storytelling is also really exciting as a new tool to use with students. I know it takes a lot of time, but maybe you could incorporate several subjects into one project like reading, social studies, grammar, etc. This would be a great lesson for the media specialist to do also. The students would really enjoy it, and they would probably learn a lot too.
Hey, I'm with the company you mentioned, Sylvan Dell! Just so you know, we're currently awarding eBook resource grants to schools nationwide. Visit http://www.sylvandellpublishing.com for more info, and let me know if you'd ever like additional info about us :) Thanks so much for the shout out, Jill!
